Lou Lam (1986) is a British abstract expressionist painter. Currently living and working in Amsterdam, her textural, multilayered works explore the complexities of human connection and self-discovery.

Working primarily with acrylic color and transparencies, her paintings reflect a deep engagement with the natural world and the internal dialogue that shapes human experience. Layers of single strokes—both in color and monochrome—symbolize the tension between life’s distractions and the search for meaning, mirroring the process of understanding oneself and connecting with the world.

A graduate of Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Arts, London, Lam spent over a decade living and working in Hong Kong. During her time there, she was deeply influenced by Asian culture and social movements. Hong Kong exposed her to art as a platform for human rights advocacy, and environmental issues. This influence appears in the tension between tradition and modernity within her work, as well as the exploration of emotional/cognitive processes and the use of art as a tool for healing and connection.

The harsh wet heat of Hong Kong forced her to adapt her approach to painting. Oil and other traditional mediums became nearly impossible to work with in such an unforgiving climate. The intense humidity affected drying times, textures, and consistency, leading to countless setbacks and frustrations. Turning to acrylic mediums was not just a creative choice but a necessary adaptation. The environmental challenges of space and climate ultimately shaped her creative process, influencing the flow and layering of colour, and deepening her connection to the material and the act of painting itself.

Her creative process is both meditative and intuitive—balancing the spontaneity of single strokes with the contemplative layering of colour fields. Lam has been greatly influenced by Japanese culture, language and philosophy, particularly Wabi Sabi (the beauty of imperfection), Kinsugi and the concept of Ma (stillness, emptiness, or absence). The process of waiting patiently between layers reflects the significance of the space between objects, the silence between sounds, and the stillness between movements.

Through her paintings, Lam seeks to create moments of pause for inner dialogue and self-reflection. She believes that when we connect more deeply with ourselves and our environment, we cultivate healthy self-expression, and creative discovery—fostering mutual understanding of others, empathy, and hope for positive social change. Her work invites viewers to engage with shared human experience, finding common ground through vulnerability and creative exploration. Her paintings stand as an invitation to explore, to feel, and to find beauty in the present process rather than the outcome.
