Allay
55"x 71"
2023
Allay is part of a new series of paintings, exploring the concept of liminality—the state of being in transition, caught between what was and what is yet to emerge. Layers of paint are applied, scraped away, and reapplied, mirroring the cyclical process of growth and transformation.
The tension between absence and presence, erasure and re-creation, reflects the vulnerability and uncertainty of becoming. Through this rhythmic process of destruction and renewal, the painting captures the quiet power of evolving—where fragments of the past remain visible beneath the surface, shaping the emerging form.
Allay, which is to relieve and to calm, is reflected in the soothing nature of earth tones. These natural hues, deeply connected to the earth, act as a balm for the soul, offering a sense of grounding and peace. In the process of scraping away paint and building layers, there is an emotional and psychological allaying—a quieting and softening of tension through the act of revision. Just as allaying eases discomfort, the act of erasure in the painting symbolizes letting go. To sooth and quieten internal conflict. The layers left behind, a reminder that the past is not fully erased but interweaves, becoming part of the healing and the present.
